Week 2 at AAC Camp
We had a few new campers join us this week; some coming back from vacation and some traveling from afar. This week was full of more fun and more communication opportunities, even though it may have been a bit more messy (literally...Oobleck-spray-paint-shaving-cream-kinda-messy) than last week, but much fun was had. Amongst all of those amazing activities it was hard for our campers to pick their favorite, but the spray painting art may have won it. It was enlightening to see some of our campers with complex bodies accessing these tasks using switch accessible tools, such as our switch accessible squirt gun, use of aluminum pans to add sound to the painting, and red tape to outline the target.
We continue to have fun singing with Rusty during Music and moving our bodies with Tammie at Zumba. The campers made delicious 3-minute microwave pancakes, with some enjoying the taste with syrup and others enjoying the sensory experience playing with the soft warm pancakes.
Our vocabulary focused on concepts big/little, kindness, friends and animals with the story of the Lion and the Mouse. This week our communication Partners worked on increasing their comfort level with modeling communication using high- and lite-tech AAC, as well as signs and gestures. Next week we will work on feeling comfortable implementing a prompting hierarchy. Check out the prompting hierarchy cheat sheet we use at camp.
